Background check in progress: what it means

“Background check” and “security check” are phrases applicants use for the quieter middle of many permanent residence files. IRCC may not narrate every step. That silence is stressful — and often normal.

What is typically verified

Identity, criminality, and security-related information can involve Canadian and international checks. Additional documents or interviews are sometimes requested.

While you wait

  • Keep your contact information current in your IRCC account.
  • Respond quickly if IRCC asks for police certificates or clarifications.
  • Avoid duplicate web forms that do not change eligibility.

Moose can remind you of personal milestones, but it cannot see IRCC’s internal security queue.

When to take further steps

If the whole application is beyond the time shown in the official processing times tool, review past processing time options and the web form guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long do background checks take?

There is no single public countdown. Complexity, country of residence history, and verification partners all matter. Compare overall application times on Canada.ca rather than inventing a background-only deadline.

Do I need GCMS notes immediately?

Not always. Notes can help when a file is far past normal times or after a refusal. They are not a magic accelerator.

Can I travel during a background check?

Follow the conditions of your current status and any IRCC instructions. Ask a qualified representative if your situation is complex.
