    What is the CRS score?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based formula the Government of Canada uses to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Every candidate gets a score out of a maximum of 1,200 points. In each round of invitations (a "draw"), IRCC sets a cut-off, and everyone at or above it receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Your CRS score comes from four buckets:

    • Core / human capital — age, education, language ability, and Canadian work experience (up to 500 with a spouse, 460 without).
    • Spouse factors — your partner's education, language, and Canadian experience (up to 40).
    • Skill transferability — combinations of education, language, and experience that reward each other (up to 100).
    • Additional points — a provincial nomination (600), French skills, Canadian study, or a sibling in Canada (up to 600).

What is a good CRS score in 2026?

There is no fixed pass mark — the cut-off is whatever it needs to be to fill each draw. As a rough guide:

    Draw typeTypical CRS range
    General (all-program)480–550
    Canadian Experience Class490–540
    French-language category380–480
    Healthcare / trades / STEM category420–510
    Provincial Nominee (with +600)700+

Because category-based selection lets IRCC invite candidates by occupation or language, a lower core score can still win an invitation in the right category. See our 2026 draws guide for how this works.

How to increase your CRS score

    • Raise your language score. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 across all four abilities is often worth 50–100+ points once transferability is included. This is usually the fastest lever.
    • Add French. Strong French (CLB 7+) can add 25–50 points directly, and French-category draws have had far lower cut-offs.
    • Get Canadian work experience. Even one year adds points and unlocks the Canadian Experience Class.
    • Pursue a provincial nomination. A PNP nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation.
    • Complete Canadian education. A one- or two-year program adds 15 points; longer or graduate study adds 30.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good CRS score for Express Entry in 2026?

General (all-program) draw cut-offs in 2024–2026 have mostly landed between roughly 480 and 550. Category-based draws (French, healthcare, trades, STEM) and Provincial Nominee draws often invite at much lower or much higher cut-offs. A score above 500 is competitive for many general rounds, but the required score changes every draw.

How can I increase my CRS score?

The biggest levers are a higher language score (retaking IELTS/CELPIP to reach CLB 9+), gaining Canadian work experience, adding a second language such as French, completing Canadian education, and — most powerfully — a provincial nomination, which adds 600 points.
