Express Entry in 2026: a calm complete guide
Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing skilled-worker permanent residence applications. In 2026 it still rests on three federal programs, a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and rounds of invitations — including category-based selection. This guide walks the path from profile to Confirmation of Permanent Residence without the panic.

What Express Entry actually is
Express Entry is not a visa by itself. It is an application management system. You create a profile, receive a CRS score, wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in a round that matches your profile, then submit a full electronic Application for Permanent Residence (e-APR) within the deadline IRCC gives you.
The three federal programs
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — for people with qualifying Canadian skilled work experience.
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) — for skilled workers, often applying from outside Canada, who meet points-grid and other requirements.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) — for people with experience in eligible skilled trades.
Some Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates also use Express Entry when their nomination is “enhanced.” A nomination typically adds 600 CRS points.
CRS scores and draws
IRCC ranks candidates with the Comprehensive Ranking System. About every couple of weeks, IRCC may hold general, program-specific, or category-based rounds. Cut-offs change. Treat any “safe score” number you see online as historical context, not a promise.
After an ITA
An ITA starts a hard deadline — typically 60 days — to submit a complete e-APR with documents. After submission you usually receive an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR), then biometrics/medical/background steps, then a final decision and documents such as PPR and COPR/eCOPR.

What programs use Express Entry?
Express Entry manages applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Some provincial nominees also enter through Express Entry-enhanced streams.
Does a higher CRS guarantee an invitation?
No. Invitations depend on the type of round IRCC holds and the cut-off for that round. Category-based and program-specific rounds can invite lower or higher scores than general rounds.
