Express Entry categories in 2026
Category-based selection lets IRCC invite Express Entry candidates who meet specific economic goals — not only the highest overall CRS scores. For 2026, IRCC published an updated set of categories. Use this page as a map, then verify the occupation lists and language rules on the official category page.
Current 2026 categories
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations
- Education occupations
- Transport occupations
- Physicians with Canadian work experience
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Researchers with Canadian work experience
- Skilled military recruits

How category rounds work
In a category round, IRCC invites the top-ranking candidates who are eligible for that category under the ministerial instructions for the round. You must already be in the Express Entry pool and meet a federal program.
A sane strategy for candidates
- Confirm your NOC/TEER and whether it appears on the current list.
- Improve language scores if French or higher CLB unlocks a category or CRS gains.
- Keep documents ready so an ITA does not become a scramble.
- Track draw types — general, CEC, PNP, and category — instead of obsessing over one number.
Track draws without refreshing all day
IRCC publishes rounds in the rounds of invitations table. Moose’s draw history tool and the iPhone app summarize recent rounds for planning.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a high CRS to get a category invitation?
You still need to be eligible for an Express Entry program and meet the category criteria. Category cut-offs can be lower or higher than general rounds depending on who is in the pool.
Can I belong to more than one category?
Yes, if you meet the criteria for more than one category. IRCC invites based on the instructions for each round.
Where is the official category list?
On Canada.ca under Express Entry category-based selection. Always confirm occupation lists and French requirements there.
