Additional document requests (ADR), explained
An additional document request — often nicknamed ADR — is IRCC asking for something more before they continue. It is disruptive, but it is also a clear instruction: the file needs input only you can provide.
How to respond well
- Read the request twice; upload exactly what is asked.
- Use clear file names and complete translations when required.
- Submit before the deadline shown in your account.
- Keep copies of everything you upload.
Timeline impact
Waiting on applicant documents can extend overall processing. This is one reason two people who applied the same week finish months apart.

Does an ADR mean refusal is likely?
Not by itself. It often means IRCC needs clarification or missing evidence before they can continue.
Does the processing clock pause?
IRCC notes that processing can take longer when they wait on you. Respond completely and on time.
What if I cannot get a document in time?
Contact IRCC through the channels they provide before the deadline and explain with evidence. Consider advice from a regulated representative for complex cases.
