Guide
Work and study permit processing times
Work and study permits have their own IRCC processing estimates, separate from Express Entry PR timelines. Start with the official processing times tool and choose the exact application category that matches how you applied.
What moves times
- Completeness of biometrics and supporting documents
- Country of residence / visa office workload
- Program-specific requirements (e.g., PAL/provincial attestations where applicable)
- Whether you applied inland or from outside Canada
Published times are not a promise. Incomplete applications can be returned or delayed.

Frequently asked questions
Are inland and outside-Canada times different?
Often yes. Always select the correct situation in IRCC’s processing times tool.
Does a study permit guarantee PR later?
No. Study and work permits are temporary. PR requires a separate pathway such as CEC, FSW, or PNP.
Can Moose track permit milestones?
Yes — Moose includes permit-oriented milestone templates for personal planning, separate from official IRCC status.
